• Biggest challenges for candidates are restrictive ballot access laws, limited or no access to debates, and corporate funding of opponents' campaigns. The Green Party accepts no corporate money.
• The Green Party will hold its presidential nominating convention in 2008, Chicago, although several candidates have declared their intent to run,
none have yet filed papers with the FEC.
• Representatives from Green Parties around the world will attend the Global Greens conference to be held May 1-4, 2008, in São Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Wangari Maathai, founder of the Mazingira Green Party of Kenya and 2004 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, is one of many prominent Greens from many nations planning to attend and speak. grassroots democracy.
• The first national Green Party meeting in the US took place in August 1984 in St. Paul, Minnesota. August 2008 will mark the 24 th Anniversary of our first national meeting. The Association of State Green Parties, founded in November 1996, became the Green Party of the United States after recognition by the FEC in July 2001. November 2007 marks our 11th Anniversary. The Green Party has so far participated in three election cycles: Greens nominated Ralph Nader for President in 1996 and 2000 and David Cobb in 2004. The party has run women for Vice President in all three elections (Winona LaDuke in 1996 and 2000; Pat LaMarche in 2004) and has been the only political party to run a Native American for Vice President (Winona LaDuke).
